Word Clue

Here you will find a medieval castle and one of the only airports in the world with a beach runway. Strangest part is that the beach is open to sunbathers and swimmers except when the windsock is flying (indicating that a scheduled flight arrival is imminent). At high tide the runways are under water. Emergency flights occasionally operate at night, when the airport lines up vehicles to shine their headlights to illuminate the beach runway and reflective strips laid on the sand.

A favorite local dish here is a savory pudding containing sheep’s pluck, minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and traditionally encased in the animal’s stomach and simmered for about 3 hours.

Sushi on Five is just the start of new things coming for Celebrity Cruises’ cuisine experience. Next up is incorporating the program Dine Aware into the Celebrity cruising experience, which will debut in November 2016 and will make Celebrity the first cruise line to use the program. Dine Aware is the only standard for the food and beverage industry that focuses on food allergy and intolerance communication and experiences, meaning guests with special dietary needs will be able to dine confident while sailing on Celebrity Cruises.

Most specialty restaurants onboard are an additional charge to dine at, but are a much lower pricepoint than what you would have to pay to dine at a comparable restaurant on land, making it both an amazing culinary experience and deal. Be sure to book your specialty restaurant in advance of your sail date or as soon as you board as many of the restaurants fill up fast, particularly on certain nights. To find out more about the dining experience onboard Celebrity Cruises, or to book your cruise and start reserving your specialty restaurant experiences, visit www.CelebrityCruises.com or speak with your travel agent.

Word Clue

This city has been the national capital since the French Colonization of this country. Situated on the banks of three rivers, this city is home to more than two million people. There is a famous Russian Market here, but ironically you won’t find anything from Russia for sale. This city has changed its name each time a new government has been installed. It is considered disrespectful here to show or point the soles of your feet toward another person. Therefore feet must be tucked in while sitting. The head is considered the highest point of the body and therefore should never be touched, even in the kindest manner.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Situated on the banks of the Tonle Sap, Mekong and Bassac rivers, Phnom Penh (pronounced “pA-nom pen” with silent H), is a city of 2.2 million residents. Top sites to visit include Choeung Ek Genocide Center, Royal Palace, Daughters of Cambodia Visitors Center, Russian Market, National Museum and Silver Pagoda. Siem Reap, the port city for Phnom Penh (pronounced “Seem-reep” with a slight trill to the R almost like a Spanish R) is visited on select Southeast Asia and Thailand/Vietnam cruises by Celebrity Millennium. Siem Reap is also home to the Angkor Wat temple complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is surrounded by a gigantic moat and is the largest temple structure in the world.

Cruising on Celebrity This Holiday Season

Spend the Holidays in the Caribbean with this Spectacular Cruise Deal from Celebrity Cruises

You’ve probably heard of Christmas in July sales – think of this as Christmas in August (plus Hanukkah and New Year’s!) thanks to the incredible deals Celebrity Cruises is having on itineraries departing in December 2016 and sailing over Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Year’s. What’s so great about these offers that it will have you bidding your typical holiday plans good-bye and jetting off to the Caribbean? Read on to find out.

The Perks Double…and Even Quadruple

You may have heard about our “Free Perk” deal, an ongoing offer that lets you choose from four stellar offers the one that is the best fit for you when you book an oceanview stateroom or above. These perks include a free Classic Beverage Package (which includes alcoholic beverages), free unlimited Internet package (via Celebrity’s innovative Xcelerator high-speed Internet service), $300 credit to spend onboard (think spa treatments, specialty dining, shore excursions), or free gratuities (yup, gratuities for your cabin steward and other staff are added onto your booking cost in one convenient daily fee – this perk covers that). Depending on which one you choose, you can save hundreds off the total cost of your vacation.

Right now, when you book a cruise before August 31 that departs between December 18 and December 31, you get to pick TWO of these perks. Or if you really want a memorable holiday, book one of Celebrity’s sumptuous suites and get all four perks (this is an ongoing offer).

But wait, sail to the Caribbean over the holidays and you don’t have to book a suite to get all four perks if you book before the end of this month. Stay in a blissful AquaClass or Concierge Class verandah stateroom and you’ll also get all four perks. (Though still check out the suites – they’re pretty amazing.) This is an amazing value-add that will make your cruise feel all-inclusive while you experience the spa-centric AquaClass or newly enhanced Concierge Class of staterooms onboard.

So now you’re probably daydreaming over the thought of spending your holiday sitting on your own veranda, sipping a cappuccino or glass of wine, and watching the turquoise Caribbean sea ripple past you…but are worried there might not be enough room in your budget for that AquaClass, Concierge Class, or Suite Class accommodation. Luckily, here’s one more benefit of this deal. If you book an oceanview stateroom before the end of this month, you’ll get an automatic upgrade to a veranda stateroom.

Reduced Deposit and 3rd and 4th Passengers

We’re not done with the Caribbean holiday special yet! Book now or by August 31, 2016 and you’ll also only have to put down 50% of the typical deposit to secure your stateroom onboard.

In addition, over the holidays, we know you often will be traveling with children or other family members and we haven’t forgotten about them either. Many of our staterooms can sleep three or four (and sometimes even more) passengers. If you’re traveling with such a group, those extra passengers also get some perks since additional guests in a triple, quad, family or suite stateroom (3rd/4th/5th guests) receive a Classic Non-Alcoholic Beverage Package and 40-minute Internet package as part of this deal.

This destination on a rare cloudy day.

Word Clue

Discovered by a Portuguese explorer, this city boasts over 7,000 farms, more than any other city in its country. There are also some strange laws here. Hypnotism is banned in public schools and it is against the law to swim in any lake in this city. Water is a hot commodity in here. The city imports an estimated 80 to 90 percent of its water, totaling 168 million gallons a day. If imported water was placed into gallon containers, it would circle the earth one and a quarter times. More than 200 cruise ships berth in this city’s harbor each year and this city’s airport is one of the busiest single runway airports in the world.

San Diego, California

Located 120 miles south of Los Angeles, San Diego is the second largest city in California (1.4 million residents) and eighth largest in the US. Historically home to the Kumeyaay people (Native Americans), San Diego was the first site visited by Europeans on what is now the West Coast of the United States.

Interesting trivia about San Diego includes the fact that while San Diego sports teams have never won a World Series, Super Bowl or NBA championship, San Diego is skater heaven. Olympian Shaun White and legendary skater Tony Hawk were both born and raised here. There are over 7,000 farms in San Diego and the city produces more avocados than any other place in the US. Nearby La Jolla used to have an area of houses referred to as “the munchkin houses” due to the fact that they were inhabited by some of the actors who played Munchkins in the Wizard of Oz film. Charles Lindbergh made history when he flew from San Diego to New York and then non-stop to Paris on the Spirit of St. Louis in 1927. The San Diego Zoo played home to the first baby panda born in the Western Hemisphere since 1990 with Hua Mei, born to a pair of giant pandas. The panda even got a café named after her in the zoo. Celebrity Cruises visits and sails from San Diego on numerous Panama Canal and Pacific Coastal itineraries.

Port of Call Spotlight: San Francisco…with an Overnight

San Francisco is one of the most iconic cities in America. It’s also a cruise port for some of Celebrity Cruises’ Pacific Coastal cruises. So what all can you do while in port in San Francisco? Here are some of the highlights — including a rare overnight stay in the Golden City.

Golden Gate Bridge and Park

The most famous feature of San Francisco is the impressive Golden Gate Bridge and its stately red arches. It’s worth a drive or walk across so you can see those arches towering above you. Next to the bridge is Golden Gate Park, a massive park by the water that boasts excellent views of the bridge and bay plus has walking trails, gardens, and museums.

Celebrity Cruises sailing by the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

Alcatraz

Alcatraz is one of the most well-known prisons in the world since it was touted to be impossible to break out of. Located on a small island in the middle of the bay, Alcatraz now holds tourists who visit for a few hours to tour the cells that formerly held inmates including Al Capone and Arthur “Doc” Barker. A tour boat will take you to the island where a guide will meet you and take you around the premises of the former prison.

Pier 39 on Fisherman’s Wharf

Fisherman’s Wharf borders the bay and is right by the city center of San Francisco, making it an easily accessible spot for visitors to explore. For many visitors, the highlight of Fisherman’s Wharf, which spreads down the waterfront, is Pier 39, which is bursting with entertainment. Pier 39 has educational centers such as the Aquarium of the Bay and the Sea Lion Center, the latter of which makes sense since you can typically see sea lions sunning themselves on the docks near Pier 39. The famous pier is also home to delicious seafood restaurants, shops, excursion companies, musician performances, and some cool musical stairs.

Painted Ladies

The “Painted Ladies” is the nickname given to a row of Victorian houses lining one side of Alamo Square in San Francisco. The houses date back to the late 1800s and are painted in varying pastel shades. Beyond it, the skyscrapers of San Francisco stand stark against the skyline, providing one of the best views in San Francisco. Alamo Square is covered in grass, making it an ideal place for a midday break of picnic lunch.

Lombard Street

Lombard Street is the curviest street in the world and its switchbacks zigzag down a steep street in the heart of San Francisco. Driving down the street is a fun experience, but even if you don’t have a car you can visit Lombard Street and walk down it or just peer at it – and all the cars snaking down the asphalt – from the bottom of the hill it’s on.

Stay Overnight in San Francisco During Your Cruise

Ready to explore San Francisco and starting to worry a day isn’t enough time? Well, you’re in luck. Celebrity Cruises offers a number of overnights in cruise ports around the world and we’re excited that San Francisco is one of those ports. An overnight cruise port is special since it gives visitors more time in port and the chance to explore a city or region both during the day and into the night. This is ideal for San Francisco since it has a vibrant nightlife and culinary scene. Visit one of the city’s trendy clubs or lounges, or make a reservation at the current hot spot restaurant. To see sailings that have overnights in San Francisco, click here.

Overnights also give you more time to get away from the city if you’ve already explored San Francisco and want to experience the area around it. For many visitors, this means wine country and the nearby valleys of Napa and Sonoma. Celebrity Cruises offers a Napa Valley Wine Train Excursion that lets you experience the gorgeous scenery of Napa Valley on a fun wine-centric mode of transportation, while the Sonoma Wine Country shore excursion takes you over the Golden Gate Bridge to Sonoma Valley where you’ll tour a local winery and partake in a tasting. To see other shore excursions in San Francisco, click here.

This ancient walled city is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its extensive cultural and monumental heritage and historical co-existence of Christian, Muslim, and Jewish cultures. This imperial city of three cultures is known for production of its swords, which are found for sale in every shop here today. A famous 16th century Renaissance painter, sculptor and architect called this city home. A stone fortification is the highest point in this city and was used as a palace in the 3rd century and later seized by Republicans in a very famous battle where the colonel’s 16 year old son was taken hostage and later killed when his father refused to surrender. There is also a 13th century cathedral, medieval castle, monastery and famous synagogue which was erected in the 12th century and is now owned by the Catholic Church. It is one of the oldest synagogues still standing in the world.

Victoria Beach in Laguna Beach, California

Located 70 miles north of San Diego and 50 miles south of Los Angeles, Laguna Beach is formerly a territory of Paleoindians, the Tongva people, and then Mexico. The area became part of the United States following the Mexican-American War. It was named Lagona, a corruption of the Spanish word meaning “lagoon,” for the two lagoons at the head of Laguna Canyon. Founded in 1887 as Lagonas, it was renamed Laguna Beach in 1904. The city, picturesquely situated among stunning cliffs, coves, and canyons, has developed as a coastal resort and art colony. Here you will find a Mediterranean climate, several art festivals including the famous Pageant of the Masters, Festival of the Arts and the Sawdust Festival, and beautiful beaches. Laguna Beach is also home to St. Francis by the Sea, recognized as the smallest Catholic Cathedral in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Staying Connected on Your Celebrity Cruise

What to Know About Internet and Phone Access Onboard Celebrity Cruises

If you’re worried that sailing away at sea means losing your connection to those on land, you can put your mind at ease. Today it’s easier than ever to stay connected to email and social networks while cruising. And if you’ve heard stories of slow Internet connection while cruising, you’ll be glad to hear Celebrity Cruises is changing all that. Here’s what you need to know about staying connected at sea.

Special XCelerate High-Speed Internet

Celebrity Cruises recently introduced XCelerate Internet at Sea, an innovative wi-fi service that provides higher speeds of Internet than is typically found at sea. Celebrity Xcelerate is now on all of Celebrity Cruises’ ships, with the exception of Galapagos sailings (which still have Wi-Fi onboard in public areas).

Where to Connect

The Wi-Fi onboard Celebrity Cruises means you can access Internet from your stateroom or lounge areas on your own personal laptop or tablet. If you prefer not to travel with electronics, you can still stay connected by utilizing the Celebrity iLounge, a state of the art Internet Lounge where you can access the World Wide Web 24 hours a day. Celebrity iLounge also has classes, such as video editing, website creation, and tutorials on getting the most out of your iPad, iPhone, Macbook, or other Apple device.

How Often to Connect

While cruising you can get different Internet packages depending on your needs. While even pay-by-the-minute plans are available, your best bet if you’re wanting to stay connected is the Unlimited plan package. This gives you access to the Internet at all times while onboard during your cruise for one daily rate.

If having unlimited Internet on your cruise is important to you, be sure to keep an eye on Celebrity Cruises’ Specials since we sometimes offer a free perk option when you book that includes an Unlimited Internet Package. Currently, anytime you book in an oceanview stateroom or above you can use your Go Big amenity choice for Unlimited Internet (learn about all the awesome Go Big amenities here). Third and fourth passengers in a stateroom also receive 40 minutes of Internet to use during the cruise and a non-alcoholic beverage package (an especially great perk if you’re bringing the kids along on your cruise).

Phone Services Onboard Celebrity Cruises

For those also wanting to stay connected via calling and messaging, AT&T offers an AT&T Mobile Packages service for Celebrity Cruises passengers that has a variety of phone plans depending on your needs. For one low rate during your cruise you’ll get a set number of texts and call minutes to use. AT&T is just one option; you can also contact your own cell phone service provider to enquire about cell phone plans at sea. Regardless of service provider or plan, any charges for your phone plan while cruising will be charged by the phone company (not Celebrity Cruises) and will show up on your mobile bill.

Each stateroom also has an in-room phone that can be used while at sea to make calls, or for friends and family to get ahold of you if needed. The cost is $7.95 per minute, so is best for a quick call or emergency situation.

To find out more about Celebrity Cruises Internet and Phone Plans, visit www.CelebrityCruises.com or speak with your travel agent.
