The Garden of Eden…on a Cruise Ship

The Latest Reveal for Celebrity Edge is a Transformative Lounge and Entertainment Space that Brings the Outside In

Tell us this: when you think of cruising, do these words come to mind?

Chillful. Playful. Sinful.

No? Well then, you’d better change your perception of cruising because the latest reveal of the new Celebrity Edge ship is delivering that and much more, so you’d also better get used to these words epitomizing your vacations at sea:

Modern. Luxurious. Immersive.

But back to those first three adjectives. They describe Eden, an incredible, action-filled dining experience Celebrity Cruises is offering on board Celebrity Edge.

Eden, an innovative space on Celebrity Edge

The space for Eden on the ship is remarkable. It expands upwards across three decks with a background of glass windows (almost 7,000 square feet of glass!) and feels like a nature wonderland. The design for Eden even incorporates in the Fibonacci sequence, or “Golden Ratio,” a design pattern often found in nature and which has been incorporated into stunning works of art and architecture around the world. Now this pattern will be delighting passengers on Celebrity Edge.

Garden of Eden

Upon entering Eden, you’ll be met with an atmosphere that is nature-filled and like a garden. Beyond the interior ambiance are those glass windows, which provide panoramic views of the sea. After the sun goes down, the space turns inwards and sets the stage for a world-class performance that will amaze diners.

Chillful Mornings

Start your morning on Celebrity Edge surrounded by a calm, natural oasis in Eden. Participate in Yoga or take a seat and enjoy a coffee while you gaze at the ocean or the hanging live plant pillars.

Playful Afternoons

Enjoy the Eden environment in the afternoon while you take part in an enrichment seminar or class, like wine tasting or culinary demonstrations. You also may see an aerialist hanging from the ceiling because, again, this is no ordinary cruise space.

Sinful Evenings

In the evenings, Eden is transformed into Eve at Eden, when the entire space comes alive through artistic performances and delectable cuisine, fused together to create an experience unlike nothing else at sea that will indulge all of the guests’ senses. The cuisine itself will be experiential with elements of surprise and is incorporated into the whole experience — this isn’t your typical sit-down restaurant dining experience.

The performance breaks all the “rules” of typical cruise ship entertainment. The characters, called “Edenists,” in this show are immersed among the audience and will even be serving your cuisine.

After the performance, guests can head up to deck 5 to a bar framed by an 18-foot Library of Plants where they can get a cocktail made that incorporates herbs straight from that library.

The Designers

One thing that ensured Eden would live up to the vision Celebrity Cruises had come up with was to work with world renowned designers. That team was made up of architect Scott Butler and designer Patricia Urquoila. They used their years of expertise to create a space that is connected to the sea and is truly transformative, no matter what time of day guests visit it. Variety Worldwide, known for their unconventional theatrical performances like Queen of the Night, was also brought on to help put together an unforgettable theater journey that makes guests feel as if they are part of the performance. Don’t expect it to be like anything you’ve seen at sea – or beyond – before.

Can you guess where in the world this destination is from the clues below?

Word Clue

Imagine this: In the cool shade of evening, a farm manager from a French chocolate company leads you slowly through the trees. He prunes branches, knocks down termite nests and handpicks nocturnal ants from the fruit. When he spots a bright yellow, football size pod, he raises his machete and cuts it down with a single stroke. A second crack of the blade splits open the dense shell, revealing a mass of glimmering white pulp packed in the center. He hands you the pod, and you dig your fingers inside the slippery, pulp covered seed. The pulp is sweet and tart, like nothing you’ve ever tasted. But it’s the white seed at the center of the pulp that’s the real prize: the cacao bean, the pride of this country’s chocolate.

Such a scene can unfold when you’re visiting this capital city, which is regarded by many as the most beautiful on its continent. It’s a city where you can still take a taxi anywhere in town for $1 to $5 and find a menu del dia, usually a four-course meal of soup, salad, meat/rice/vegetables (or even guinea pig – a delicacy here), dessert and beverage for less than $5.

This city is nestled at the base of an active volcano, uses the US dollar as its currency, and its old town has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Quito, Ecuador

Quito was officially founded in the year 1534 AD, making it one of the oldest cities in the Western Hemisphere. Ecuador has the highest active volcano on earth, Cotopaxi, which stands 19,347 feet above sea level. Quito, a city nearly two miles high in elevation, is the highest capital city in the world and the only capital city in the world menaced by an active volcano. Ecuador has four unique geographical locations, theAmazon jungle – home to Yasuni national park, the Coastal region – with surfing and different typical foods, the Galapagos Islands – with its rare and amazing animal and plant life and the Andes (Sierra) – a popular vacation and retirement destination. In Ecuador’s Amazon jungle, there are still groups of indigenous people who have never seen the modern world. Ecuador is one of the only places in the world where it is possible to visit a jungle (Amazon), mountains (Andean), and ocean beach (Pacific) all in one day.

Situated on a famous river next to a former Benedictine abbey, this village is a suburb of a major city. The village features several famous cafés, bookstores, publishing houses, and is home to a famed school of fine arts. Following WWII this town became home to many small jazz clubs, mostly located in cellars, frequented by American soldiers and sailors.

A prized liqueur is produced here, bearing the name of this village. There are only a few fleeting weeks each spring when wild blossoms can be gathered to make this fragrant liqueur. These starry white, fragrant flowers are grown on hillsides and gathered by hand, with many brought back to this small village by bicycle. Each bottle of this liqueur is individually numbered to reflect the year in which the flowers were picked. This famous liqueur is a key ingredient in Celebrity Cruises Q’sine Sangria.

Port of Call Spotlight: Costa Maya, Mexico

Costa Maya is the name given to a tourist region of coastline in the Quintana Roo region of Mexico bordering the Caribbean Sea, located just north of Belize. Costa Maya is a unique cruise port in that the port area and pier was built entirely to cater to visitors. Unlike other cruise ports where you typically leave the port immediately upon arriving, you may find yourself wanting to spend the whole day in port in Costa Maya! Though there’s plenty to do beyond the port as well.

Costa Maya’s port was rebuilt after a hurricane in 2007 making it feel fresh and new. The port was built to reflect a small Mexican village and is full of shops, dining options, and even a large pool with a swim-up bar. There’s also a dolphin interaction experience and an adventure park nearby.

The adventure park, called the Lost Mayan Kingdom, is a great option for families or thrill seekers as it has a number of waterslides, zip lines, river tubing, and a pool and cenote to swim in.

The area around Costa Maya port was originally a fishing village and its small town, Mahahual, is still there and makes for a great way to spend your day. You can take a shore excursion to get there or take a quick taxi ride (just a few minutes) from the pier. In Mahahual you’ll find more shops and a gorgeous beach with lounge chairs you can rent.

Mahahual is also a great place to rent some snorkeling equipment and swim around in the water to view sea life as Costa Maya is adjacent to part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second largest reef in the world. You can also do a snorkeling shore excursion that will take you on a boat to a prime snorkeling spot on the reef.

While a big draw of Costa Maya is the water – from the sea to pools to water slides – that’s not all there is to do for adventure seekers. Those who want to see how ancient civilizations lived will be excited to know there is a shore excursion to Chacchoben Ruins, a lesser known, but still important ancient Mayan site in Mexico.

Celebrity Edge is Celebrity Cruises' newest ship.
Celebrity Edge: the newest ship from Celebrity Cruises

The other thing that makes Costa Maya such an alluring cruise destination is that it is one of the ports of call the Celebrity Edge (Celebrity Cruises newest cruise ship) will be making when it begins sailing at the end of 2018. One of the itineraries Celebrity Edge will offer is a 7-night Western Caribbean sailing that is scheduled to stop in Key West, Florida; Costa Maya, Mexico; Cozumel, Mexico; and George Town, Grand Cayman. You can visit even more ports of call and make your vacation a 14-night one by booking back-to-back sailings that includes Celebrity Edge’s other itinerary for the Eastern Caribbean and also visit San Juan, Puerto Rico; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; and Philipsburg, St. Maarten.

Can you guess where in the world this destination is from the clues below?

Picture Clue

Word Clue

This is a country where St Patrick’s Day is a National Holiday…but it’s not Ireland. That’s because the Irish settled here and perhaps it reminded them of their lush, green homeland and that the geography of this country bears a striking resemblance to coastal Ireland (if coastal Ireland had black sand beaches).

But the phenomenon that really put this area on the map was a massive, devastating volcanic eruption that occurred here recently. A complete city instantly buried under volcanic ash and hardened lava. Abandoned houses and the atmosphere of chaos and fear still reigns in this area today. It’s literally a modern-day Pompeii. Lava completely devastated this former tourist town, destroying everything in its way, including the airport, homes, and restaurants. Life has literally stopped here. Since people fled the eruption, the former capital has remained completely untouched. The population was evacuated in a hurry, that’s why people left their belongings, dishes, appliances and even food in refrigerators. In the hills overlooking the former capital, luxurious villas are still located – in former times it was the most expensive real estate here. Surprisingly, looters did not touch the city.

Today, visitors are strictly prohibited from visiting this area on foot, largely due to the threat of another volcanic eruption. But helicopter tours are a popular way of observing this city which was literally frozen in time. The northern part of this country has become the new capital city, with tourism and a population of approximately 5,000 people (less than half the population before the eruption.)

Montserrat, British West Indies

The island of Montserrat is a British Overseas Territory (BOT) that lies 30 miles southwest of Antigua, 300 miles southeast of Puerto Rico, and northwest of Suriname and French Guiana (France).

Montserrat is nicknamed the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean both for its resemblance to coastal Ireland and for the Irish ancestry of many of its inhabitants. There are only three places in the world where St. Patrick’s Day is a public holiday: Ireland, the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, and this tiny British island of Montserrat in the Lesser Antilles. But only on Montserrat do the celebrations last all week and include displays of African dance and a freedom run.

The eruption of the long dormant Soufrière Hills volcano is what put the island of Montserrat on the map. In July 1995, the volcano became active and eruptions destroyed Montserrat’s Georgian era capital city of Plymouth. Nineteen people were killed when three square miles of forests, agricultural land, and villages were flattened by debris and lava flow.

Nearly half of Montserrat’s population has emigrated since that first eruption; of those who remain, many thousands had to abandon their homes and relocate farther north. Today, two thirds of the island – mostly lush, fertile land – has been declared an Exclusion Zone because it lies in the likely path of future flows. Stern notices guard the edges of the zone, promising that anyone entering without authorization will be prosecuted.

Celebrity Cruises visits the nearby islands of Antigua and Guadeloupe, where guests can take helicopter excursions over the Exclusion Zone of Montserrat.

Surrounding this city you will find breathtaking scenery, from windswept volcanic peaks overlooking the sea, to green valleys dotted with vibrant wildflowers. It was here that the Japanese bombed the US Navy during WWII. Last week, a volcanic eruption occurred just 60 miles from this city, triggering a high aviation alert. This city’s school district has been voted one of the ten best in its country.

Dutch Harbor, Unalaska, Alaska

Located within the Aleutian Islands off Amaknak Island, about 800 miles southwest of Anchorage at the intersection of the Pacific Ocean and the Bering Sea, “Dutch” provides a harbor and a gateway for ships and airplanes to reach the small city of Unalaska, Alaska, via a 500-foot bridge. Amaknak Island is home to almost 60 percent of the city’s 4,500 year-round residents, although it has less than 3 percent of its land.  During the year, 20% of all flights are cancelled from Unalaska’s airport due to harsh weather.

Aside from the attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, Dutch Harbor was one of only a few sites in American Territory to be bombed by the Japanese during WWII. The Battle of Dutch Harbor took place on June 3-4, 1942, when the Imperial Japanese Navy launched two aircraft carrier raids on the Dutch Harbor Naval Operating Base and U.S. Army Fort Mears. The Japanese also bombed Elwood Oil Field near Santa Barbara, California, and dropped an incendiary bomb on Brookings, Oregon, starting a wildfire.

The hit TV show Deadliest Catch is filmed here in Dutch Harbor. A mile long spit extending from the northeast end of Amaknak Island makes Dutch Harbor a natural port, protecting ships from the waves and currents of the Bering Sea although winds have tossed shipments from decks of ships. Dutch Harbor is close to some of the richest fishing in the world, and is ice-free. Celebrity Cruises visits Dutch Harbor, Alaska, on Japan-Bering Sea sailings.

What to Know About a Celebrity Cruises Vacation Package

Cruisetours, City Stays, and Explorations with Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises offers several different types of vacation packages depending how much time you have, where you want to go, and how guided you’d like your trip to be. But they all have one thing in common: a fabulous stay on land followed (or occasionally following) a modern luxury cruise at sea.

Here’s what you can expect on each of Celebrity’s vacation packages:

Cruisetours

Tour Director on the Wilderness Express, part of a Celebrity Cruises Cruisetour.
Train ride through Alaska’s interior.

Celebrity Cruises offers Cruisetours as part of its Alaska sailings. A Cruisetour combines a cruise with a small-group tour, which means you’ll spend your days on land with an expertly put together itinerary and a guide to make sure everything goes smoothly – plus plenty of free time to explore on your own.

As the U.S.A’s biggest state, Alaska has a lot to offer travelers, and a Cruisetour lets you explore both the coastal and interior regions of Alaska, or you can opt for a Cruisetour itinerary that lets you explore more of the large country to Alaska’s south: Canada.

Cruisetour Through Inland Alaska

You’ll take a train into the wilderness of Alaska and explore national parks, towering glaciers, and stay in rustic and luxurious lodges. A highlight for many exploring the interior of Alaska is a visit to Denali, home to America’s highest mountain peak.

Cruisetour Through the Canadian Rockies

When you add on a Canadian Rockies tour to your Alaska cruise departing from Vancouver, you’ll spend time touring some of Canada’s most spectacular cities, including Vancouver, Jasper, Banff, and Calgary, with some nature exploration thrown in. You can also choose a Cruisetour itinerary for the Canadian Rockies that puts more of a focus on some of Canada’s gorgeous national parks instead of cities.

To read more about Cruisetours, click here.

Also, a bonus for west coasters – these Cruisetours are often very easy to get to thanks to affordable flights up and down the west coast!

City Stays

Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona, Spain

For those who want a less intensive land stay before or after their cruise that still lets them have the chance to get an in-depth experience of one particular destination, a City Stay through Celebrity Cruises is an ideal option. A City Stay is offered in nearly all of Celebrity Cruises’ embarkation ports; in other words, the city where your cruise begins.

City Stays takes out the guess work and research for you about where to stay and sites to see you can’t miss because Celebrity Cruises has already figured it out for you.

You’ll stay for three nights in an ideally situated high-end hotel that includes breakfast. During your stay you’ll also get to take part in a fully guided day tour around the city with a destination expert who will tell you just about everything you could possibly want to know about the city you’re visiting and show you its top sites. You’ll also have an evening city tour option that includes a farewell dinner.

In addition to your tours and hotel stay, you’ll find convenience abounds on your City Stay since your hotel will have a Celebrity Cruises hospitality desk to assist you with any needs you may have. You’ll also have transfers to the hotel from the airport and then onto your ship when the City Stay portion of your vacation package ends, making for an even more relaxing, stress-free time.

A small sample of cities you can do a City Stay in before your cruise includes: Athens, Barcelona, Hong Kong, Rome, Singapore, and Sydney. Click here to see all the cities and read more about City Stays with Celebrity Cruises.

Celebrity Explorations

Blue Lagoon in Reykjavik, Iceland
Blue Lagoon in Reykjavik, Iceland

Like Cruisetours and City Stays, Celebrity Explorations itineraries let you see the world by both land and sea, making for a unique and memorable vacation. However, the Explorations differ a bit by taking places in a location completely different from where your cruise will be. You’ll fly to one place for an in-depth vacation on land, and then hop on another plane to get to your cruise in Europe. Where can you visit as part of the land portion of your Celebrity Explorations package? Iceland for hot springs and Northern Lights chasing or Tanzania for an African Safari.

During your Celebrity Explorations vacation, expert guides and cultural excursions will give you an in-depth view of what makes the place you’re visiting so special. With Celebrity Cruises Explorations you can also be assured that you’ll be traveling in luxury, whether going from port to port on a cruise ship or spending the night in an opulent hotel. To find out what else you can expect and to learn more about what you’ll see in Iceland or Tanzania, read our blog post all about Celebrity Explorations.
