The Great Blue Hole in Belize

The hole is circular in shape, nearly 1,000 feet wide and 400 feet deep. The hole was formed over 150,000 years ago (based on analysis of stalactites). As the ocean began to rise, caves were flooded. The Great Blue Hole is now part of the larger Belize Barrier Reef System, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in the heart of Central America, Belize is bordered by Mexico to the north and Guatemala to the west and south.
